Terpenes 101 – Are Terpenes Unique To Cannabis?

Welcome to Cannabis Terpenes 101 – the basics about terpenes found in cannabis.

Here is what you will learn:

– What is an essential oil?
– What are terpenes and how do they relate to cannabis?
– Are there any terpenes which are unique to cannabis?
– Is it possible to get the same terpenes found in cannabis more efficiently from other plants?
– What are the potential health benefits of terpenes?
– Why do cannabis plants produce terpenes (what is the purpose of terpenes)?

Terpenes are all the rage in the cannabis world.

While cannabinoids like THC and CBD are odorless and have no flavor, terpenes are the components responsible for giving cannabis its distinct odor and flavor.

In fact, drug-sniffing dogs are trained to detect cannabis by learning the smell of a common terpene found in cannabis known as caryophyllene oxide.

And terpenes do more than just provide the smell and taste of cannabis.

Terpenes have been shown to have therapeutic benefits like anti-anxiety, pain-relieving, anti-inflammatory, and anti-depressive effects.

One common terpene in cannabis in particular, beta-caryophyllene, even interacts with the CB2 receptor. Beta-caryophyllene is often considered a cannabinoid for this reason.
